The history of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering started with the establishment of the Graduate School of Engineering (master’s program) in 1973, followed by the addition of the Graduate School of Science (master’s program) in 1978. In April 1989, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering (master’s and doctoral program) was established to cultivate talented human resources and promote the research and development of science and technology under Japan’s science and technology promotion policies. The Graduate School of Science and Engineering was Japan’s first joint graduate school in cooperation with the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), which is a research institute geographically close to Saitama University and blessed with competent researchers. At the start of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, the master’s degree program consisted of eleven majors: five science majors and six engineering majors. The doctoral program consisted of three majors: the Material Science, the Production Information Science, and the Bioenvironmental Science. In response to the needs of the society, the Department of Informatics and Mathematical Science was established in the doctoral program in April 1994, and the Department of Environmental Control Engineering (independent major) was added to the master’s program in April 1995. After the reorganization of the Graduate School in April 2002, the Environmental Control Engineering Program (an independent program) was established in the doctoral course, offering twelve majors in the master’s course and five majors in the doctoral course. In April 2006, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering was reorganized following Japanese government’s policy of prioritizing graduate school education, starting the new organization you see today.
