Leander S. Hughes

Leander Hughes is an associate professor of English Education at the Saitama University Center for English Education and Development, working at the intersection of computer-assisted language learning and cross-cultural communication through poetry and play.

His primary research develops and evaluates computer assisted language learning (CALL) technologies for communicative language learning, vocabulary acquisition, learner autonomy, and motivation, documented on his Google Scholar profile. In the classroom, this takes shape as programming and game development courses taught to total beginners as an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course.

His second focus is cross-cultural communication through poetic form. Starting this fall, he teaches a course pairing Japanese haiku with its English-language counterpart, "MyKu," exploring how structure carries cultural perspective across languages. His own creative work in this space includes the haiku collection Odd Ends, published under his pen name, Rendei.
