INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

As of the first of May 2009, 493 international students, from 33 differrent countries, have been studying at Saitama University. International students are classified as undergraduate, graduate school and research students, or exchange students based on the exchange agreements that Saitama University has with other universities. At the Saitama University homepage (http://www.saitama-u.ac.jp/) there is information on university entry requirements, classes, faculties, and the graduate school syllabuses; at the Center for International Exchange homepage (http://www.isc.saitama-u.ac.jp/english/) information is offered in English.
In some cases, it is possible to undertake part of the graduate school course in English, however generally classes and exams are held in Japanese. Formally, a competent level of Japanese language ability is required from undergraduate students.
The Center for International Excange established at Saitama University not only offers education in Japanese Language and Japanese Studies and guidance in academic and student-life related matters, but it also coordinates a short-term exchange program and has put into effect various other programs for cultural interchange with local Saitama residents.
There is an International House with three buildings comprising over 150 rooms at Saitama University. After entering the university, self-funded international students who prove to be diligent may be eligible for assistance in the form of private scholarships or the Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarships. Students can apply for an exemption from part or all of their tuition fees.
The university calendar features orientation in April, field trips for international students, the university festival in November, as well as the friendship party for international students which provides them with an opportunity to socialize with Japanese students, tutors, academic advisors, and administrative staff.
