The Geosphere Research Institute of Saitama University (GRIS) currently undertakes several kinds of research. Firstly there is ongoing research into local earthquake damage reduction and improvement of earthquake-proof technologies. Research is also continuing to advance the restoration process of the soundness of the local 'life-line net' that was damaged by earthquake.
Secondly research into the removal of pollution from soil and underground water and dangerous waste removal have been performed with international collaborative researches. The Geosphere Research Institute is the only institute in Japanese universities researching hazardous waste disposal in deep underground, setting apart the institute as a leading force in research in this area.
GRIS has two divisions for research fields making great efforts in achieving their aims.
This division investigates the research field of big city systems resisting earthquake disasters. The staffs are making efforts for reduction of the earthquake damage through a disaster with earth vibration and a prediction of relation with ground structure. We are also study on development of earthquake proofing technology of a lifeline.
This division studies nature of the ground zone and a natural phenomenon. The staffs are making efforts to contribute creating a safe city through investigating the reality of environmental pollution within the ground. It was for harmony built an idea of city environment to live together and developed it with a study of high technology to relate to technique of science to realize the idea and a system and had it, and an establishment purpose of ground zone scientific research center.
