Reserach Institutes

Geosphere Research Institute

The Geosphere Research Institute of Saitama University (GRIS) currently undertakes several kinds of research. Firstly there is ongoing research into local earthquake damage reduction and improvement of earthquake-proof technologies. Research is also continuing to advance the restoration process of the soundness of the local 'life-line net' that was damaged by earthquake. Secondly research into the removal of pollution from soil and underground water and dangerous waste removal have been performed with international collaborative researches. The Geosphere Research Institute is the only institute in Japanese universities researching hazardous waste disposal in deep underground, setting apart the institute as a leading force in research in this area.

Brain Science Institute

The Brain Science Institute was established in January 2009. It comprises three sections focusing on three fields: the analysis of brain function, analysis of cerebral development and diseases, and development of new technologies concerning brain science research. As a facility aimed at centralizing research at Saitama University on brain science as well as on technologies related to brain science, the Brain Science Institute works with RIKEN and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute to conduct research ranging from basic research on molecules, cells, and neural circuitry to research on the causes of and therapies for diseases, such as autism and epilepsy; human-focused research using functional MRI and other tools; and research into the development of devices that support everyday life, such as the brain machine interface (BMI). The goal of such research is to analyze brain function from the perspectives of biological science, science?, and engineering and seek possible practical applications of the findings.
The center holds monthly brain science seminars and strives to highlight research being conducted in various fields of brain science by inviting researchers from outside the university to give presentations on their work.

Project Research Centers

The Research Management Bureau’s Project Research Center serves as the central clearinghouse for research projects that have already yielded concrete results and contribute to society as a whole or the local community and research projects whose results are expected to really give something back to society, both of which are based on research conducted through external funding or on a contract basis. It aims to revitalize research activities at Saitama University and actively disseminate information on the university’s research findings.

Priority research theme

The Saitama University Research Management Bureau (RMB) selects several priority research themes from a wide variety of fields, including science and technology and the humanities and social sciences, based on the following:
(1) consistency with the distinctive features of the university, (2) potential to lead to world-class research findings, and (3) importance and “evolvability” appropriate for center-of-excellence programs in Japan. The RMB provides support (funding and space) for research that is carried out under these themes.
